Happy Monday... Looks like they didn't steal anything at least.
You think I can pull the ignition off and remove the key from the back? I've never opened one of these up.

People are such assholes.
I take it you couldn't get enough to grip onto with the needlenose?

would a magnet work?

Looks like they broke it off, then jammed it in deeper. No go on the needle nose pliers.
Agreed. I don't get it.

I’ll try when I get off work , but it really looked jammed in there. I wonder how hard it would be to bypass the ignition...

I think you are going to have to remove it and take it to a lock smith or buy a new one with new keys.

Assuming this is the miata? And not sure your year but with out fully pulling it apart probably not. See link
If you haven’t called a lock Smith yet I would because I bet they have a tool that could get that out.
Or you could replace it all. I have done that before

When this happened to my 323 GTX I had to replace the entire ignition cylinder. So I had a key for the doors and another key for the ignition. It sucked, but at least I got the last new ignition cylinder Mazda USA had.

Keys are usually some type of soft brass-like metal. Not very magnetic, if at all.

wow thanks for attracting that to my attention

Looking at online resources... Definitely seems like you’re right.
I really don't want to put any more money into this car

Try lock smith. Usually to get the cylinder out you need to be able to turn the cylinde r partially and that requires your key to be able to get it to release and come out. I can’t remember how but I have smashed the pin holding the cylinder that allows it to slide out but that was in a Corolla.

removing the ignition can be a massive hassle, usually there are one way bolts and such.
I would try first putting a dab of superglue on a piece of metal and sticking it to the key. It will either break off, or pull out the broken chunk. Either way, it would be a few minutes of effort so no real loss if it doesnt work.
(this is how I got a broken headphone jack out of my ipad)

That's a good idea.

Usually the ignition lock cylinders are impossible to remove intact if you cannot turn it into some other position than “lock”.
Maybe you could bend some semi stiff wire (thin TIG welding rod perhaps)
into a hook shape form. You might be able to squeeze it over some detent that would help the key to come out.

Strong magnet might do the trick, I have a few lying around for weird stuff like this
